There are other UI issues that could be overcome with some acclimatization I'm sure, but why would I when it offers me nothing that winamp does as good or better? So functionally it's there, but in terms of UI usability I would call it vastly inferior to winamp.Ĭlick to expand.I'm probably not going to convert you, but I think some of your issues are easily overcome. If you see "Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP v2.x.x" in the right pane, then you have correctly installed the SHOUTcast Broadcast DSP Plug-in. Things like playlists should just be available in the main window. I also don't like that every 2nd feature you click opens a child window. Sorting is the most basic form of fuzzy searching, whereas a treeview is only good for walking down a known path and therefor offers little that can't be done with an exact string search. All with a single click on a column header in a single window. I can sort my albums by title, year, tracks, length or size. In winamp I can sort my artists by name, album count, track count, play length and size. That album view tree needs to be in a couple of tables with relevant sortable columns. What puts the nail in the coffin for me is that a single treeview is just not a suitable control for managing thousands of artists and albums. It has the required functionally and I could get over the fact that it's an eyesore since it's not a window I'm going to look at for a long time. I paid good money for all my LPs, CDs and in recent years my online purchases (fortunately almost all of my music taste is made available for download as flac by paying directly to the artist) and I'd like to be able to play them when I want without having to sign over my credentials to some corp and telling them exactly when I feel like having a good sob to Wuthering Heights.Ĭlick to expand.I've tried it not too long ago. It's all Spotify, iTunes and similar online trash integration with insufficient features for a local music library, or the UI just isn't usable for a large local music library. Trust me, I'm literally aching, for years, to find something suitable built on a more recent codebase, but it just isn't there. Any other player I ever found either missed one of these features, or was bloated with a million of online services that couldn't be shut up. Winamp (with the Bento skin) offers all of these and works entirely offline (all winamp online features like artwork lookups and shoutcast streams are optional, if you block it completely at the firewall the software still works perfectly). I only need a few things from my player: it has to be able to index my large music library and offer various search options, it has to be able to play mp3, ogg and flac files, it has to have a decent UI, and it has to be free of any corporate integration. Over the years I have often looked for something better, but always had to conclude nobody made anything better.
